Injuries on reality TV shows

  • Published: June 22, 2016

People love action, especially where movies and television programming is concerned. This explains why more reality TV shows are being aired than ever before in history. As people become bored with one series, newer, more dangerous scenarios take their place. The producers know that human nature becomes dulled to stimuli over time and requires more to stay engaged. Ratings depend upon providing that stimuli.

We know, however, that “reality” in regards to TV isn’t completely real, don’t we? Guns are fake, people trained for stunts fill in for real people and all manner of safety measures are in place to prevent accidents. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Injuries on reality TV shows are increasing at a drastic rate. People on the sets are getting permanently hurt, and even killed.

The why behind it

It takes money to produce any kind of television show. The reality programs can cost even more than big-budget films. Cutting costs often falls just behind the need for ratings in the minds of producers. This leaves safety of workers and participants far down the list of priorities, and this is where the danger lies.

People are being hired to perform jobs they aren’t qualified for, “common” safety measures are being over-looked in order to cut costs and backup plans in case of an emergency are non-existent. Add to this the increased danger of the situations people are being placed in and it is a disaster waiting to happen.

When fun becomes a nightmare

On reality shows, many people are required to sign liability waivers that exempt the producers from being charged if injury occurs. This leaves anyone injured at a loss – of money, health and even life. Often, a few safety measures could have prevented a tragedy. Instead, what viewers see as entertainment can end up destroying families. There are things you can do.

Make sure you are covered

Hiring a lawyer to go over any contracts before they are signed can help protect you from losing out on compensation for medical bills should an accident occur. If an injury does occur, it is essential to contact an attorney as soon as possible. In this way, an investigation of the situation can take place.

If it is found that required safety measures were not in place or corners were cut in favor of saving money, you may be able to get compensated for your injury, negligence and more. While an accident can’t be undone, seeking legal help can make the difference between spending your life penniless, or at least being able to provide for the basic needs of your family.
